Dr. Todd Murphy’s special interest:
Dr. Murphy has a special interest in the field of veterinary rehabilitation and conditioning, aka physical therapy in the human world. Rehab plays a significant part of Dr. Murphy’s practice. Rehabilitation and conditioning goals are to help reduce pain and improve mobility, speed recovery, reduce the risk of complications while getting off medications sooner rather than latter. Rehab consist of pre and post surgical exercises, as well as, preventative exercises which may or may not take the place of a surgical recommendation. Conditioning is used in the athlete as well as management of the older arthritic or overweight patient to help mobility. Diagnostic musculoskeletal ultrasound helps identify and specifically treat many soft tissue- ligament, tendon- injuries seen in active dogs. Therapeutic modalities frequently used include underwater treadmill, laser, ultrasound, neuromuscular electrical stimulation, and shock wave therapy. Rehabilitation and conditioning are essential for helping Dr. Murphy’s patient achieve optimal outcomes.
In the summer of 2015, Dr. Todd Murphy completed formal training in rehabilitation and conditioning at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine where he obtained his Canine Certified Rehabilitation Practitioner (CCRP) certification.
As well over the past five years, Dr. Murphy has become increasing interested in the field of regenerative medicine. Regenerative medicine uses the bodies own abilities to help heal itself. Examples include stem cell therapy and platelet rich plasma. Used in conjunction with surgery or as a stand along treatment, many conditions can successfully be treated. Stem cell therapies are frequently used for conditions such as arthritis management, ligament/ tendon repair, and more recently for their immunomodulatory effects- atopy, inflammatory bowel disease, etc. Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is prepared from the patients own blood and is loaded with growth factors. These growth factors are used to help stimulate the body to heal more quickly. PRP is frequently used in aiding comfort and healing in the post operative knee, speed healing of bone fractures, or assisting ligament/ tendons in their healing process. There are many, many new and exciting opportunities in veterinary regenerative medicine that are helping patients daily achieve better outcomes.
In a nut shell, Dr. Todd Murphy uses his many interest and talents in more of an Integrative Medicine approach to helping his patients heal more quickly. Not just surgery by itself, but what other options are available to our patients for their success. Rehabilitation and conditioning are essential to every surgical patient; however, some patients presented with sporting related injuries which typically were felt to be best treated with surgery are now being treated with exceptional results using non surgical options- regenerative medicine and rehab. Veterinary surgery and medicine are ever changing just as human medicine is experiencing. Through continuing education and speaking with leaders in the field, Dr. Murphy is staying on top of the advances in the field of small animal sports medicine and surgery.
